The drive to the hospital was agonizingly slow as a team of paramedics worked on Olivia. They were all over her, clipping her neck into a brace, her fingers to a monitor and trying desperately to wake her.

Nothing could have prepared me for the hopelessness I felt sitting at her side, holding her hand, praying to anyone that was listening for her to survive.

When we entered the hospital, her team turned into a small army of nurses and doctors. I was pushed backwards as they wheeled her into a private bay and told to stay.

From the spot they left me in, I watched as they began tearing at her dress with scissors, exposing her to the many eyes that searched her for injuries. Pitch black bruises covered her chest and abdomen where the seat belt had held her.

Nothing could have prepared me for watching a stranger put his hands on her lower stomach, pushing down on the already vicious bruises that painted her skin.

Olivia lay there in her underwear, completely exposed, and the irrational part of my brain wanted to cover her, to protect her modesty from their invasions. I lurched forward with the intent of smacking their hands away when Bones and Red grabbed at me and held me back.

“Sir, let them work.” It was Bones in my ear, his gruff voice barely registering. “She needs them right now.”

A doctor pushed through, placing an oxygen mask over her mouth, and began demanding her vitals from the team that was working on her. Their French blurred, my brain too slow to translate, but I knew they were worried about the blood that covered her and why her blood pressure kept bottoming out.

A nurse turned and pointed at me.

I looked down and saw it was me that was bleeding. A chunk of glass was wedged in my right bicep, sticking out at an odd angle, trailing blood behind me.

“Focus on her,” I growl. “I’m fine, just make sure she’s okay.”

A nurse putting an IV into Olivia’s arm took a quick step back when Olivia’s wrist twitched to the sound of my voice. Opening her bloodshot eyes, I watched them widen as she peered up at the team around her.

Her right hand reached out towards me, and I saw that she had two broken fingers.

“Olivia,” I called, my heart in my throat.

Her breath fogged up her mask in pain as she tried to lift her head to search for me.

The same nurse that had fit the IV rushed to me, dragging me by the arm and into the room. The nurses and doctors separated, making room for me briefly before they got back to work.

“Parlez-lui pendant que nous travaillons.” Talk to her while we work.

“Olivia, stay awake for me, okay?” I whispered, kissing her forehead while her eyes rolled. “Hey, keep your eyes open, okay?”

Please, don’t leave me here Olivia. I need you.

My hand smoothed away her bloodied hair.

“It hurts,” she gasped. “E-Everything hurts.”

The pain in her voice pulverized me to a pulp.
